EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
