Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
