The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
